Pentecost Sunday is the day that commemorates the descend of the Holy Spirit on the apostles inform of fiery tongues, an event that took place fifty days after the resurrection of Christ. The paschal mystery of the passion, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus culminates in the sending of the Holy Spirit by the Father at the request of His son Jesus Christ on His disciples. The feast also commemorates the official inauguration of the Christians church by the apostolic preaching of St. Peter, which resulted in the conversion of 3,000 Jews to the Christian faith.
In this message, Fr. Mbaka reminds the adorers that Pentecost is not only the event of the past but also of the present in the sense that the Holy spirit that Jesus promised to send to His disciples are not only meant for them but to all who earnestly desires it and encourages them to pray fervently to be filled with the Holy Spirit in order to experience great transformations in all aspects of their lives.
Holy Spirit of God, we welcome you today. Please, fill us with your power and anointing in Jesus, Name, and Amen. Holy Spirit we need your power because all powers belongs to God.
We have come today to receive power, therefore ask the Father to fill you with the power of the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to make a name for Himself today in this special Pentecost celebration even as you welcome Him into our midst. Do not say that you have been coming for Pentecost, because this particular one is going to be extra-ordinary. Today, you will be filled with the Holy Spirit like never before in Jesus Name, Amen. Eph 5: 18 says, ‘’ do not be drunk with wine, rather be filled with the Holy Spirit’’. In Act 7:55, Stephen full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right. God has not changed; the same thing is going to happen again. There will be an infilling of the Holy Spirit today, and your life will receive a great transformation just like the apostles when the first Pentecost occurred as recorded in Acts 2.
When the day of Pentecost had come, the first followers of Jesus were all together in one place. All of a sudden a sound came from heaven like a strong wind, filling the house where the people had gathered. something like tongues of fire rested on their heads and they were all filled with the Holy spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the spirit gave them the ability to speak .The language they were speaking were heard by thousands of Jewish people who had come to Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost. The content of the miraculous message had to do with God’s mighty works. Many who had heard these messages were amazed though others thought the apostles were just drunk. At some point, peter stood up and preached his first sermon. He interpreted the events of that morning in light of the prophecy of prophet Joel as recorded in Joel 2;28-32 which says,’’ in the last days, God says, I will pour out my spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions and your old men will dream dreams. In those days, I will pour out my spirit even on my servants-men and women alike and they will prophesy’’. In this text, God promised to pour out his spirit on all flesh, empowering diverse people to exercise divine power. Peter went on to explain that Jesus had been raised and had poured out the spirit in fulfillment of God’s promise through Joel. It was reported that after peters’ sermon, 3,000 people were added to the church that day (Acts 2).
Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came fifty days after the death and resurrection of Jesus, there were followers of Jesus, but no Christian gathering that could be meaningfully called the church. Thus, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started. It is the church’s birthday. This day became very significant for Christians because fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus, the Holy spirit was poured upon His first followers, thus empowering them for their mission and gathering them together as a church.
You need the power of the Holy Spirit
You can have a good lifestyle with the help of the Holy Spirit? First of all, you have to desire the gifts that the Holy Spirit gives. Then, approach God with humility and prayers to help you. John 7: 37 says, ‘’let those who are thirsty come to me, anyone who believes in me may come and drink, for the scripture declares, ’rivers of living water will flow from his heart’’.
You can’t do without the Holy Spirit. You need Him in all aspects of your life in order to function and operate in a high spiritual level. Just like Ezekiel in Ezk. 37 who was overtaking by the Spirit of God to a valley filled with dried bones to prophesy life unto them, you need the Holy Spirit to revitalize your mortal bodies. There may be significance of dried up bones in your life- dried up love, dried up joy, dried up favor, dried up business, dried up womb, and dried up kidney. Because the spirit of God was upon Ezekiel and he was able to prophesy the message of life unto the dried up bones, you too will receive the power to prophesy life unto every areas of your life that are dead and they will come back to life through the power of the Holy Spirit in Jesus Name, Amen.
The gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit
It is Jesus’ desire that you receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes with thousands of gifts. Each person is to receive His /Her own according to his / her disposition and the measure the Holy Spirit wants. Desire earnestly for various gifts of the Holy Spirit. In 1 Cor.12, St. Paul explains the various gift of the Holy Spirit which comes from the same Spirit who activates all of them in Christians for the common good of all. They take different forms like prophecy, teaching, act of charity, healing, speaking in tongues, discernment, vision, wisdom, faith, service, administration, miracles, and interpretation. It is the one and only spirit that distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
Also in Gal.5;22, Paul listed the fruits of the Spirit to include; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The person who is united with God will have the same spirit with Him. Paul emphasized that these spiritual gift are to be used for the service and benefit of others, and not for selfish ends. The gifts are to be used in love, and not jealousy or envy for the common good of all and for the building up of the body of Christ. Try to develop your own gift instead of envying other people’s own so that your gift will not be dormant. 2Cor 13 explains that love is the greatest of faith and hope. Love binds all the gifts of the Holy Spirit: ‘’if I have all the gifts of the holy spirit without love, I am nothing, I am like a gong –making a noise’’.
The Holy Spirit–a wind, fire, and a dove
The Holy Spirit can come in form of a wind, tongues of fire and a dove. As a wind, He blows wherever He wills. You do not see Him, but you feel His presence and the outcome of His work like healing, miracles, deliverance, gifts and talents. It can manifest like fire as He did on Pentecost Day when He descended on the Apostles in form of tongues of fire. It can also manifest in form of a dove. This can be seen during the baptism of Jesus Christ at the River Jordan as recorded in Math.3;16,’’ after His baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on Him’’.
When the Holy Spirit comes, extra ordinary things begin to happen and great transformations are recorded. You can imagine the apostles that were timid and living in fear after the death of Jesus becoming suddenly bold, courageous, and audacious and came out in the open to preach and pray. The recipients of the Holy Spirit moves into action and great transformation takes place as can be seen during the first Pentecost .When the Holy Spirit is at work, no other power can stop Him. Be filled now with the power, anointing, auction to function in Jesus Name, Amen.
Holy Spirit transforms
When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you will be reformed, renewed, revived, enlightened and transformed. You will possess supernatural powers to do exploit. Acts 1 says, you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes. This is the spirit that Jesus promised His apostles in John 14; 26 when He said, ’’but when the helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name will come, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you’’. Whatever you are passing through, you are going to have a helper. His name is the Holy Spirit. The Power of the Holy Spirit will transform your life and enable you to do the impossible. The Holy Spirit empowers us to serve God, bind us together as the body of Christ, helps us to pray, intercedes for us and guides us.
In Luke 12: 11-12 Jesus told the apostles not to worry about what to say when they are being brought for trial, for the Holy Spirit will tell them what to say. Be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, so that God can use you as a magnet of miracles. Many difficulties you have been passing through will disappear by the time the Holy Spirit possesses you. Our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit, anyone who destroys this temple will be destroyed. Since the Holy Spirit dwells in us, any other power that is tormenting your life shall be destroyed by the power of the Holy Spirit in Jesus Name, Amen.
John 16:13-15 says, ’’when the spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever He receives from me’’. Every good thing belongs to Jesus. The Holy Spirit takes them and make known to us, so that what belongs to Jesus will belong to us.
Who will roll the stone away for us? The women who were going to anoint the body of Christ asked. But before they got there, the stone had already been rolled away. Remember, the Holy Spirit is a Helper as Jesus called Him in John 14; 26. In that your ugly situation, you may be asking how the problem is going to be solved, and who will help you out. But see how the impossible will happen—by the power of the Holy Spirit.
