Enugu NUJ Enjoins Ugwuanyi to Address Water Scarcity, Insecurity

The twin problems of insecurity and perennial acute water scarcity currently plaguing the Enugu metropolis and other parts of the state topped the issues addressed by the Enugu state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists at its last congress penultimate Thursday.Water scarcity has hit and remained endemic in most parts of the state subjecting the inhabitants of those areas to make do with water supply from streams, shallow wells and water tanker dealers.

Enugu and environs except Nineth Mile and Oji River, according to experts, cannot have bounteous harvest from boreholes due to cracked rock strata.

The public water supply is reportedly threatened by by faulty reticulation, production and vandalization and or breakdown of equipment at the water works substation at Ajali.

This unconfirmed sources insist are the handiwork of the water dealers in collaboration with errant water corporation workers.

Gov Ugwuanyi had promised in this year’s budget to tackle the challenge which had taken a turn for the worst since the advent of his  regime.

Similarly the  journalists in their communiqué urged the governor to address the  farmers herders crisis as most farmers especially women could no longer go to their farms for fear of the murderous herders..

Though there is  an anti-open grazing order in place,gun wielding herdsmen still abound in the forests and farms as well parading the streets of the cities leaving cow dung in their wake which would be cleaned by Enugu peoples, money, just as they cause road traffic snarls and accidents.

The communiqué urged the governors of the South East to comment on the Orlu military bombardment. On insecurity, NUJ, Enugu Council called on the security agencies to beef up security in the State to ensure that the state of insecurity in the country does not rear it’s ugly head in the State, while calling on the State Government to beef up more security in Oruku Community inorder to douse the tension in the area even as the Council urged the South East Governors forum to speak up on the military invasion of Orlu in Imo State like any other national burning issues. While also appealing to the State Government to wade into farmers/herders crises because women no longer go to their farm alone for fear of been killed by herders. Therefore, appealed for the enforcement of open grazing law which was recently adopted by the South East Governors Forum.

Enugu Council called on Enugu State Government to increase the enlightenment and sensitization campaign on Covid 19 and ensure that citizens adhere to the Covid 19 Protocols, in order to reduce infection and fatality.

Similarly, NUJ Enugu Council pleads with Enugu State Government to step up on the enforcement of Tenancy Law in the State to reduce the suffering of Enugu residents in the hands of Landlords with regard to high cost of rent in the stat

NUJ Enugu Council called on the Enugu State Government to consider building more flyovers in Enugu State, especially in Enugu urban while appreciating the State Government on the proposed flyover at T- junction.

On sad note NUJ Enugu Council condoled with the Enugu State Government on the demise of one of it’s Exco members and Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Mathias Ekweremadu
