All things being equal, Kano Pillars Football Club, representative club in this African Champions League for Nigeria, will win the trophy for the country.
Mike Idoko, erstwhile director in the Ondo State Sports Agency and now co-ordinator of continental affairs for the Kano Club said Pillar have all it takes to bring back the trophy for Nigeria.
In a no-holds-barred with our correspondent, Idoko said Kano Pillars have over the years, acquired enough experience on the continental football scene to win the Champions’ League.
“They have been there for three consecutive seasons representing Nigeria,” he argued. “Football is like a seed. When it is sown, it requires to be nurtured. It depends on the farmer. If he works hard, the seed will grow and his yield will be substantial.”
All of us in the league are aware that the government of Kano state has worked hard in Kano Pillars. They have sustained the team financially and materially. The boys have stayed together ever since and have now blended, playing a free-flowing pattern. Now, it’s time to reap, and believe me, the yield will start from the African Champions’ league.”
Idoko said already, signs of this great yield are imminent and are manifesting: “We are seeing the signs already, aren’t we? Pillars swept their opponents in the first round off their feet. They beat them home and away. But it will surprise you that I am not drawing the strength of my argument from there. Rather, I speak from experience, from the point of view that football brings results when genuine investment is made on it.
The Pillars I know today is one in which money is not a problem. When I was forced to Kano from Akure, to assist them win the champion’s league, I was hesitant. I was comfortable in Akure. But they pleaded with me and at a point, made it official with my employers, the Ondo State government. Their argument was that if Pillars brought the Champions League, it’s not just for Kano but for Ondo State, for Nigeria.”
“The Ondo State government was impressed by their argument. So was I. We gave up. Today, I am part of the crew that is plotting for their success, and succeed, we will, by the grace of God.
